Village Refreshment is a rustic, homemade Lebanese-style cooler inspired by the simple drinks traditionally enjoyed during hot summer days. It combines fresh lemon, mint, a touch of sweetness and cold water, creating a drink that is bright, cooling and wonderfully natural.

Unlike elaborate restaurant mocktails, this version is intentionally simple—the freshness of the ingredients is the main attraction.

🥤 Ingredients

Serves 4

  • ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 cups chilled water
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • ½ cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2 tablespoons orange blossom water (optional)
  • Extra mint leaves for serving

👩‍🍳 How to Make It

1. Prepare the Lemon

Squeeze fresh lemons and strain the juice to remove seeds.

Pour the lemon juice into a large pitcher.

2. Sweeten

Add the sugar and about ½ cup of the cold water.

Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Tip: If your lemons are very sour, increase the sugar slightly.

3. Add the Mint

Add the fresh mint leaves.

Gently press a few leaves against the side of the pitcher with a wooden spoon. This releases the mint's fragrance without making it overly bitter.

4. Add Water

Pour in the remaining chilled water and stir well.

If using orange blossom water, add it now.

5. Chill

Add ice and several slices of lemon.

Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

6. Serve

Fill glasses with ice and pour in the Village Refreshment.

Finish with:

  • Fresh mint
  • Lemon slices
  • A small lemon wedge

Serve immediately.

🌿 Optional Lebanese Twist

For a more aromatic version, add 1–2 teaspoons of orange blossom water.

It gives the drink a delicate floral aroma that works beautifully with lemon and mint.

Another option is to replace some of the sugar with date syrup, giving the drink a deeper, more rustic sweetness.

🧊 Crushed-Ice Version

For an especially refreshing summer drink, blend:

  • ½ cup lemon juice
  • ½ cup mint
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 1½ cups crushed ice

Blend briefly until icy and frothy.

Add another 1–2 cups of cold water to reach your preferred consistency.

Pour immediately into chilled glasses.

🍋 Flavor Profile

Village Refreshment has a beautifully straightforward flavor:

Fresh lemon → gentle sweetness → cool mint → subtle floral aroma

It should taste refreshing rather than syrupy.

🍽️ What to Serve With It

This cooler works particularly well with a Lebanese meal of:

  • Hummus
  • Tabbouleh
  • Fattoush
  • Falafel
  • Kibbeh
  • Grilled chicken
  • Grilled lamb
  • Manakish
  • Stuffed grape leaves

It is especially good alongside grilled foods because the acidity of the lemon helps cut through rich flavors.
