Pomfret Tikhala Recipe

Introduction:

Pomfret Tikhala is a traditional Goan-style fish curry that combines the mild flavors of pomfret with a rich, spicy coconut-based gravy. This dish is a staple in many coastal regions of India and is loved for its tangy and aromatic flavors. The recipe uses a blend of spices, tamarind, and coconut to create a deliciously savory dish that pairs perfectly with steamed rice or roti.

Ingredients:

For the Pomfret:

2 medium-sized pomfrets, cleaned and cut into slices
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste

For the Tikhala Gravy:

2 tablespoons oil (coconut oil preferred)
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 tomato, finely chopped
2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon garam masala powder
1 cup coconut milk
1 tablespoon tamarind paste
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

Preparing the Pomfret:

Clean the pomfret slices thoroughly and marinate them with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15-20 minutes.

Preparing the Tikhala Gravy:

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies to the pan, and sauté for 2-3 minutes until the raw smell disappears.

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.

Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Stir well and cook the spices for another 2-3 minutes.

Cooking the Pomfret:

Gently add the marinated pomfret slices to the pan. Sear each side of the fish for 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

Add the coconut milk to the pan, stirring gently to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Add the tamarind paste and salt to taste. Continue to simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the fish to cook through and the gravy to thicken slightly.

Finishing Touches:

Sprinkle garam masala powder over the gravy and mix gently.

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.

Serving:

Serve the Pomfret Tikhala hot with steamed rice or roti. The tangy and spicy flavors of the dish pair well with simple accompaniments, allowing the rich taste of the pomfret to shine through.

Pomfret Tikhala is a flavorful dish that brings the taste of coastal India to your table. With its spicy coconut gravy and tender pomfret slices, this dish is perfect for seafood lovers looking for a hearty and satisfying meal.
