SOURCE

Ingredients:

1 cup yellow lentils (masoor dal), washed and soaked for 30 minutes
2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and diced
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons cooking oil
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Water, as needed

Instructions:

Pressure Cook Lentils:

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils along with diced potatoes, chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, and salt. Add enough water to cover the lentils and potatoes. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the lentils and potatoes are cooked thoroughly.

Tempering:

In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent and golden brown.

Spice it Up:

Once the onions are golden brown, add coriander powder and red chili powder. Sauté for a minute until the spices are fragrant.

Combine:

Once the lentils and potatoes are cooked, mash them slightly using the back of a ladle or a potato masher. Then, pour the tempered spices over the mashed lentils and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.

Simmer:

Let the dal simmer for another 5-7 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld together. Adjust salt and spice levels according to your taste.

Garnish and Serve:

Once done, turn off the heat and garnish the aloo ki dal with freshly chopped coriander leaves.

Serve hot with steamed rice or roti. Enjoy the comforting flavors of this hearty dish!

Tips:

You can customize the spice levels according to your preference by adjusting the amount of green chilies and red chili powder.

For added flavor, you can also sprinkle some garam masala powder before serving.

If you prefer a smoother consistency, you can blend the dal mixture using an immersion blender before tempering.

Leftover aloo ki dal can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave before serving.

Conclusion:

Aloo ki dal is not just a dish; it's a feeling of warmth and satisfaction. With its simple preparation and comforting flavors, it has earned its place as a beloved comfort food in many households. Give this recipe a try, and let the rich flavors of lentils and potatoes delight your taste buds!
