Ingredients
- 4 cups cold water
- 3–4 tablespoons sugar
- 1½–2 tablespoons food-grade rose water
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, optional
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1–2 teaspoons rose syrup, optional, for deeper color and sweetness
- Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
- Dried edible rose petals, for garnish, optional
1. Prepare the Sweet Water
Pour 1 cup of the water into a small saucepan.
Add 3–4 tablespoons sugar.
Warm over low heat, stirring until the sugar completely dissolves.
Do not boil the mixture.
Remove from the heat and allow it to cool completely.
This creates a simple sugar syrup that mixes easily into the cold drink.
2. Make the Rose Drink
Pour the cooled sugar syrup into a large jug.
Add:
- Remaining 3 cups cold water
- 1½ tablespoons rose water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice, if using
Stir thoroughly.
Taste the drink before adding more rose water.
Rose water is quite concentrated, so adding too much can make the drink taste perfumed or slightly medicinal.
3. Adjust the Flavor
Taste and adjust according to your preference.
For a sweeter drink
Add another tablespoon of sugar syrup.
For a stronger floral flavor
Add another ½ teaspoon rose water at a time.
For a more refreshing drink
Add another teaspoon of lemon juice.
For a lighter drink
Add more cold water.
The ideal flavor is delicately floral, lightly sweet and very refreshing.
4. Chill
Refrigerate for approximately 30 minutes.
Just before serving, stir the drink again.
Add ice to the glasses rather than putting all the ice into the jug if you want to prevent excessive dilution.
Serving
Fill tall glasses with ice.
Pour the chilled rose water drink over the ice.
Garnish with:
- Fresh mint
- A few edible dried rose petals
- A thin lemon slice
Serve immediately.
Middle Eastern Rose Cooler
For a richer restaurant-style version, combine:
- 4 cups cold water
- 2 tablespoons rose water
- 3 tablespoons sugar syrup
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon rose syrup
- Ice
The small amount of lemon balances the floral sweetness and prevents the drink from becoming overly perfumed.
Creamy Rose Milk Version
Rose water is also excellent as a milk-based drink.
Ingredients
- 3 cups chilled milk
- 2 tablespoons rose syrup
- 1 teaspoon food-grade rose water
- 2–3 tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
- Ice
Whisk or blend everything until smooth.
Serve very cold.
For a Middle Eastern touch, garnish with crushed pistachios and edible rose petals.
Rose & Lemon Cooler
For a particularly refreshing summer version:
- 3½ cups cold water
- ½ cup fresh lemon juice
- 3–4 tablespoons sugar syrup
- 1½ tablespoons rose water
- Ice
Mix everything together and chill well.
The combination of tart lemon + floral rose + cold water creates a much brighter drink than plain rose water.
Important Tip
Always use food-grade rose water intended for culinary use. Rose water made for cosmetics or skincare should never be used in a drink.
Also, add the rose water gradually. A good rose drink should smell pleasantly floral, not overwhelmingly like perfume.
Storage
Keep covered in the refrigerator and consume within 1–2 days for the freshest flavor. Stir before serving.
